Institute Overview

Online Teaching Institute (OTI) is designed for faculty members who seek to expand their repertoire of collaborative active-learning online activities. Making use of selected research articles, resource materials, guest speakers, and both asynchronous and synchronous activities, the Institute models active learning assignments and employs re-useable guidelines and grading rubrics for effective online teaching. Institute activities revolve around teaching techniques that enhance student collaborative activities.

Who Should Attend OTI?

  • Faculty re-designing a course in conjunction with an IDD designer
  • Faculty new to teaching an online or hybrid course
  • Faculty with online or hybrid teaching experience who wish to enhance their online instruction skills

Prerequisites

  • Thorough knowledge of Blackboard course management system

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand what it feels like to be an online learner
  • Employ engaging strategies for asynchronous and synchronous discussion
  • Learn appropriate strategies to promote active learning
  • Apply effective strategies for facilitating online discussion
  • Recognize learning styles to facilitate students’ online learning
  • Learn strategies to manage your workload related to online teaching.

This workshop includes extensive online components (average of one hour per day) along with three synchronous sessions using the Horizon Wimba Live Classroom. Times for synchronous sessions will be determined by a survey of the participants prior to the start of the workshop.

Online Teaching Professional Development Certificate

Online Teaching Professional Development Certificate will be issued to OTI participants upon completion of the required learning activities. 
 
Due to the intensive nature of this program, participation is limited to 20 faculty members.
